White House Says US 'Looks Forward' to Olympics

The White House says that the U.S. is looking forward to participating in the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games after a U.S. envoy conveyed concerns over security.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders wrote in a tweet on Thursday that "the U.S. looks forward to participating in the Winter Games in South Korea," adding that the protection of Americans is Washington' top priority and that the U.S. is engaged with South Korea and other partner nations to secure the venues.

The comments came after U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley had cast doubt over whether U.S. athletes would participate in the Olympics during an interview with Fox News on Wednesday.

"There's an open question. I have not heard anything about that, but I do know in the talks that we have -- whether it's Jerusalem or North Korea -- it's about, how do we protect the U.S. citizens in the area?"

On the question whether she thought it would be safe for American athletes to compete in PyeongChang, Haley said “it depends on what’s going on at the time in the country.”

When asked to clarify Haley's comments on Thursday at the regular White House press briefing, Sanders initially said that "no official decision has been made" about participation and the final decision would be made closer to the Games.
