UN Requests N. Korea Investigate 27 Forced Disappearances

The United Nations has reportedly asked North Korea to investigate 27 cases of forced disappearance that are believed to be tied to the regime.

According to the Voice of America(VOA), the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearance said it made the request to Pyongyang on Wednesday.

Forced disappearance also involves arrest, incarceration or abduction by a state agency or a group acting as a state representative.

One of the cases included in the UN request involves the disappearance of a North Korean defector in a China border area last May. The defector was working for a South Korean media outlet specializing in North Korean issues when he went missing.

Founded in 1980, the UN working group reviews reported forced disappearances and requests investigations into the cases from the suspected violating countries.
