55 Protesters Killed in Gaza Clashes as US Opens Embassy in Jerusalem

Israeli forces on Monday killed at least 55 Palestinians on the Gaza border as tens of thousands of Palestinians are protesting the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem.

According to the Associated Press(AP), Palestinian authorities said that at least 55 protesters were killed by Israeli forces and over two-thousand-700 were wounded during the demonstrations.

The Israeli military reportedly said that one of its fighter jets had struck five targets at a Hamas training facility in Gaza.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman announced the opening of the new U.S. embassy in a ceremony held in Arnona in southern Jerusalem on Monday, the 70th anniversary of Israel's creation.

Despite the bloodshed, U.S. President Donald Trump hailed the day as “a great day for Israel” and said he believed his decision to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would ultimately help forge peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Jerusalem, which is considered a holy site by the Muslim, Jewish and Christian religions, is claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians as their capital.
