Industry Ministers of S. Korea, China to Meet to Discuss Cooperation

China’s industry minister will visit South Korea for the first time since the two countries began a long-standing row over the deployment of the U.S. THAAD antimissile battery in South Korea.

An official of the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said on Wednesday that Minister Paik Un-gyu will meet with Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology Miao Wei in Seoul on Thursday of next week to discuss bilateral cooperation.

During the ministerial meeting, the two sides are expected to discuss a wide range of issues regarding industrial policies including on batteries, robots and industrial complexes.

In particular, they will discuss China’s alleged discrimination against South Korean electric vehicle battery producers. The official said Seoul is expecting progress on the issue, but was not optimistic it will be completely solved.

The official said the Chinese government is currently reviewing whether it will provide subsidies for two electric vehicles produced with LG Chem batteries, adding it could be considered some progress.
