Prime Minister Lee Denies Yomiuri Report on Economic Assistance for N. Korea

The Prime Minister’s Office is denying a Japanese report that claims Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon said the provision of economic aid to North Korea is an issue that would require discussions among the members of the six-party talks.

The Yomiuri Shimbun on Wednesday quoted Taku Yamasaki, a former vice head of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, as saying Lee made the remark during their meeting in Seoul on May second.

A senior official from the Prime Minister's Office expressed regret over not only over baseless reporting but also that Yamasaki disclosed what he claimed to have heard during a closed-door meeting.

The official said the Foreign Ministry will deliver an official message of regret through the South Korean Embassy in Tokyo.

In the same report, Yomiuri also claimed Lee said North Korea and Japan should hold a summit to reconfirm the Pyongyang Declaration reached between the two countries in 2002.
