Pres. Park: Leader Who Cannot Admit Mistakes Cannot Open New Future

President Park Geun-hye has urged the Japanese government to make righteous and brave decisions so that South Korea-Japan relations can move toward a new future of prosperity.

Park made the remark in a speech at a ceremony commemorating the 95th anniversary of the March First Independence Movement on Saturday.

She called on Japan to stop denying its past wrongdoings and write a new history of truth and reconciliation, stressing that a leader who cannot admit one's mistakes cannot open a new future.

Park said true courage is not denying the past but facing history and teaching it accurately.

Park added that denying history’s truth for the sake of political interests would only lead to isolation.

The president stressed that the wounds of Japan’s wartime sex slaves must be healed.

In the same speech, the president also proposed to North Korea that the two Koreas hold family reunions on a regular basis to ease the pains of separated families.

Park urged the North to scrap its nuclear ambitions and take the road of inter-Korean joint development and peace to usher in an era of peace and cooperation.

Park stressed that a unified Korean Peninsula would become the heart of peace that links Eurasia and Northeast Asia. She added that Northeast Asian countries would find new opportunities for development on the unified peninsula.
