Defense Ministry to Send Negative Response Regarding Ombudsman System

South Korea's Ministry of National Defense is expected to hand in to parliament a negative response regarding suggestions to institute a military ombudsman at the National Assembly.

A government official said the national defense committee of the National Assembly will soon discuss a bill that contains an article on instituting a military ombudsman. The discussion follows a recent series of severe violence cases at the barracks, including a bullying death of an Army private.

The same official added the defense ministry will formally state that the ombudsman system is not yet appropriate for South Korea's current social and security situations.

Regarding the issue, a military official said South Korea already has a similar system within the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission as well as the National Human Rights Commission of Korea. The official added countries like Canada and Sweden also have active ombudsman systems within their defense ministry or human rights commission, not at the parliament.

Sources have also said many of those who participated in a high ranking discussion on reforming military culture on Friday had expressed negativity towards the parliamentary ombudsman system.
