Saenuri Party Pressures Main Opposition Party to Return to Parliament

South Korea's ruling Saenuri Party urged the New Politics Alliance for Democracy to return to parliament after the main opposition party scheduled a mass outside rally on Saturday, stating the gathering is a "fight against public sentiment."

Saenuri's spokesman Park Dae-chul said on Saturday that the NPAD belongs at the National Assembly and that it should not abandon parliament. Park said although the ruling party hopes the rally will not go on as scheduled, if it does it should be the NPAD's last.

Park stated NPAD's politics should return to the National Assembly and not "remain outside" and said the main opposition party was still a distance away from reading public sentiment.

The spokesman said the ruling party welcomed NPAD's decision to participate in the opening ceremony for the regular session of the National Assembly, and hoped the opposition party would participate in the rest of the session to normalize the lawmaking process.

Meanwhile, another source from the Saenuri Party said it was improbable to give the special investigation committee rights to investigate and indict regarding the Sewol ferry bill, apart from the fact that it would be difficult to give way to NPAD regarding the recommendation of members to the committee.

The source said the entire issue, including compensation for the families of the victims who were aboard the ferry, should be resolved in a wise manner.
