Foreign Minister Yun Urges Swift Resolution to War Sex Slavery Issue

Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se says a swift resolution is needed for the issue of Japan’s wartime sex slavery.

Yun made the remark in a meeting in Seoul on Tuesday with Shotaro Yachi, the national security adviser to the Japanese Cabinet, noting that South Korea and Japan are set to mark the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties next year.

He expressed regret that relations between the two countries have been marred by past issues.

Citing Tokyo’s repeated vow to uphold the Kono Statement, Yun expressed concern that continuous movements are being seen in Japan that run counter to such pledges.

A Foreign Ministry official said Yachi responded by saying it is important to boost bilateral strategic partnership and promote understanding between the people of South Korea and Japan.

The official also said Yachi said he understands Seoul’s view on Japan’s wartime sex slavery issue and expressed hope that the matter will be discussed at director general-level consultations.

On the possibility of holding a South Korea-Japan summit, the ministry official said Japan knows what South Korea wants, adding that Seoul will closely watch if Tokyo’s words match its actions.
