Xi Says Will Play Constructive Role in Denuclearizing Korean Peninsula

Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to play a constructive role in achieving denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Xi made the remark on Thursday in a meeting with South Korea's National Assembly Speaker Chung Ui-hwa in Beijing, stressing the need for strengthening inter-Korean dialogue and exchanges.

He also expressed hope for the resumption of the stalled six-party nuclear talks.

Xi also said the two countries must work to achieve their trade goals by completing the follow up measures to the South Korea-China free trade agreement.

Meanwhile, when Chung raised the issue of illegal fishing by Chinese boats in South Korean waters, Xi said China will continue to strengthen monitoring over such illegal activities and asked Seoul to be careful not to complicate the situation further.

The meeting between Xi and Chung lasted for about 40 minutes.

Thursday marked the second time Chung has met with Xi since he became speaker. The first time Chung met the Chinese president was in July when Xi visited the National Assembly in Seoul.

During the July meeting, Chung proposed forming a committee for South Korea, China and Japan to jointly compile school textbooks in a bid to address Japan’s distortions of historical facts in school curricula.
