Gov't, Hyundai to Foster Gwangju into Hub of Hydrogen Vehicles

The government has announced a plan to develop Gwangju City in South Jeolla Province into a center for developing and manufacturing hydrogen vehicles in cooperation with Hyundai Motor Group.

The government on Tuesday announced the plan during a ceremony marking the opening of the Gwangju Center for Creative Economy and Innovation.

The government, Gwangju City and Hyundai Motor Group will jointly invest 177-point-five billion won in the project.

The plan calls for combining the city’s infrastructure for auto industries with Hyundai’s technology and expertise to foster the development of the city into a hub of the auto industry and hydrogen-fueled vehicles.

Hyundai Motor plans to release some one-thousand undisclosed patents and share its factory management knowhow with 40 companies to be selected every year.

At the opening ceremony, President Park Geun-hye expressed hope that Hyundai Motor with capacity to mass produce hydrogen vehicles and Gwangju City equipped with related infrastructure will work together to build a comprehensive system of hydrogen production, filling, power generation and hydrogen cars.
