S. Korea, US Inform N. Korea of UFG Drills

South Korea and the United States will carry out their annual Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercises from Monday through August 28.

The United Nations Command informed North Korea on Saturday of the plan through a loudspeaker at the truce village of Panmunjom.

The South Korea-US Combined Forces Command also released the schedules of the ten-day joint drills, saying that the exercises were planned over the past few months and unrelated to the North's recent mine explosion in the demilitarized zone.

About 30-thousand U.S. soldiers and 50-thousand South Korean troops will participate in the drills.

A group of Swiss and Swedish soldiers belonging to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission will monitor the exercise to ensure that it is in compliance with the Armistice Agreement.

Meanwhile, North Korea threatened to take strong military counteraction against the planned drills.
