As tension rises on the Korean Peninsula over North Korea's artillery threats, political leaders paid visits to check the military's readiness and the safety of civilians.

Ruling Saenuri Party Chairman Kim Moo-sung met with Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Choi Yoon-hee on Friday and was briefed on North Korea's provocation.

Kim called for a decisive, punitive response to the North's provocations. He said that even at the risk of inconvenience and sacrifice, all South Koreans must unite to put an end to the North's habitual provocative acts.

He said he's relieved by the military's sturdy defense posture. He added that his party will also activate an emergency mode with members on standby at the National Assembly until 5 p.m. on Saturday, which is the North's deadline for the South to halt its propaganda broadcasting.

On Friday, Chairman Moon Jae-in of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy visited an evacuation center in Yeoncheon County, Gyeonggi Province, where the North's artillery shelling struck on Thursday.

After listening to the locals, Moon called on the North to immediately stop its military provocation saying that it has nothing to gain from it. He added if the situation turns for the worse and an all-out war breaks out, this will lead to the demise of the entire Korean people.

Moon urged the South Korean military to be thorough but also prudent in its response not to further escalate the situation. He also asked the government to consider holding unconditional high-level dialogue with Pyongyang.
