Opposition Party Criticizes Cabinet Reshuffle

The main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) has criticized Monday's Cabinet reshuffle, saying that the top office merely appointed replacements of ministers who resigned to run in the April general elections.

In a comment Monday, NPAD spokesman Kim Seong-soo said that it is a great disappointment that Finance Minister nominee Yoo Il-ho vowed to maintain the economic policies of current Finance Minister Choi Kyung-hwan.

The spokesman said that it is hard to understand how Yoo was tapped as finance minister just one month after he stepped down from the land, infrastructure and transport minister post.

Regarding the Education Minister-nominee Lee Joon-sik, the party raised uncertainties on whether the mechanical engineering professor at Seoul National University has insight and judgment to deal with contentious issues such as the government’s move to introduce state-authored history textbooks.

On ruling Saenuri lawmaker Kang Eun-hee being named as the Gender Equality and Family Minister, the spokesman said the designation is a typical move to reward with public posts.

The opposition party claimed that Kang was rewarded with the appointment for her active efforts to help the government’s push for state-authored history books.
