Ex-Spy Chief Registers as Preliminary Candidate as Independent

Former spy agency chief and lawmaker Kim Man-bok, who was expelled from the ruling Saenuri Party, has registered as a preliminary candidate for the April general elections as an independent.

Kim is running in the Haeundae·Gigang-eul district in southern port city Busan.

The former head of the National Intelligence Service said Thursday that he will campaign as a ruling party member if his petition filed for a preliminary injunction against the disciplinary measure he received is accepted.

Otherwise, he plans to run in the parliamentary election as an independent.

Kim was banished from the Saenuri Party earlier this month over allegations that he assisted the campaigning of an opposition candidate in a by-election.
