NIS: N. Korea Ready for 5th Nuke Test

South Korea's National Intelligence Service has asserted North Korea finished preparations for a fifth nuclear test soon after its fourth test in January.

In a closed-door meeting of the National Assembly’s intelligence committee with senior governing Saenuri Party and opposition lawmakers on Wednesday, the NIS said the North was waiting for leader Kim Jong-un’s nod for the next weapons test.

Saenuri Party Rep. Lee Cheol-woo and the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea(MPK) Rep. Shin Kyoung-min reported NIS officials saying the North had the underground shaft and nuclear materials for a test and was awaiting a political decision by senior officials.

The two lawmakers added though that the NIS had failed to specify a particular date for a possible test.

The lawmakers also cited NIS officials saying that the North still needed three to four years to deploy a submarine-launched ballistic missile(SLBM) due to the extra cash and technologies needed to finish development. But NIS officials reportedly said the North appears to have attained the technologies needed to eject and ignite a ballistic missile from a submarine.
