Parties Fail to Reach Agreement on Forming Assembly

The 20th National Assembly began its four-year term on Monday, but vice floor leaders of the three rival parties failed to narrow differences on how to assign key parliamentary positions.

Vice Floor Leader Kim Do-eup of the ruling Saenuri Party held negotiations for 90 minutes at the parliament on Monday afternoon with his opposition counterparts Park Wan-ju from the Minjoo Party of Korea and Kim Kwan-young of the People’s Party.

After the meeting, Park told reporters that the three sides agreed to meet again on Tuesday.

The three parties reportedly locked horns over which party will take on the National Assembly speaker post and become chiefs of key parliamentary committees.

The Assembly speaker position was predicted to go to the Minjoo, which holds the largest number of seats in the 300-member assembly, but the ruling party is reportedly not yielding in negotiations.

The three parties, though, agreed to form the new assembly within the legal deadline.
