N. Korea Test Fires Additional Ballistic Missile

Seoul's Joints Chiefs of Staff says North Korea has test fired another mid-range ballistic missile from its east coast on Wednesday following an unsuccessful attempt a few hours earlier.

The military said that the second launch, of what appears to be a mid-range Musudan missile, came at around 8:05 Wednesday morning from Wonsan, Gangwon Province. It is not immediately known if the test was successful.

A JCS official said that the North's previous firing at 5:58 a.m. from the same area appears to have failed.

A government source said that the missile flew for a few minutes after being fired from a mobile launch pad and failed to reach the minimum range for a ballistic missile.

The South Korean military had closely monitored the North for a possible missile launch since Tuesday when it captured launch preparations.

Wednesday's launch attempts marks the North's fifth and sixth attempt to launch the Musudan missiles.

The previous four launches were conducted in April and May. They all exploded in mid-air or plunged soon after launch.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ordered his officials in March to quickly succeed in testing a ballistic missile that can be armed with a nuclear warhead.

First deployed in 2007, the Musudan missile has a range of more than three-thousand kilometers and is thought to be capable of striking any target in Japan as well as the U.S. territory of Guam.
