"I will hear what Minister Yun has to say. In particular, I will hear about what kind of practical actions South Korea will take to protect the unwavering relations between us."

Before the talks, Wang said he wants to hear from his counterpart what plans Seoul has to safeguard the ties.

It was the first high-level government contact between South Korea and China after Seoul and Washington announced their joint decision to deploy the THAAD battery on the Korean Peninsula.

“As the relations between the two countries are getting closer, they may face various challenges. Those challenges, however, are not insurmountable as we have established deep-rooted relations.”

Yun reiterated that THAAD is a self-defense measure and will not be aimed at a third country, making it once again clear that North Korean nuclear and missile programs are first to blame.

Regarding the North Korean nuclear issue, a South Korean Foreign Ministry official said that, during the talks, Wang reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Wang also clarified that Beijing will thoroughly implement sanctions on the North in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2270.

Amid strained Seoul-Beijing ties, Wang arrived in Laos on Sunday on the same plane as North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho. They are also staying at the same hotel during the ASEAN gathering.
