RFA: N. Korean Diplomat Defected due to Pressure to Send Money

Radio Free Asia reported Thursday that a high-ranking North Korean trade representative stationed in Vladivostok defected to South Korea in July due to extreme pressure he was under to send more foreign currencies to the North.

RFA quoted a diplomatic source as saying that the North Korean diplomat was unable to meet the regime’s exorbitant demand to send more money to finance large-scale events and construction projects in Pyongyang.

The source explained that he was faced with mounting pressure and a money crunch with Russia implementing UN Security Council resolutions sanctioning North Korea. He added that news about the execution of regime heavyweights, including Jang Seong-thaek and Hyon Yong-chol, further drove the diplomat to choose to defect.

It has been said that the North Korean diplomat, a first secretary, came to South Korea via a third country with his family and a considerable amount of money.

He is known to have escaped earlier than Thae Yong-ho, a minister at the North's mission in London, who defected from the regime in late July.
