4.5 Magnitude Aftershock Rattles Gyeongju Area

A four-point-five magnitude aftershock rattled the Gyeongju area on Monday evening.

The Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) said the quake struck an area eleven kilometers southsouthwest of the ancient city in North Gyeongsang Province at 8:33 p.m.

The KMA said the temblor was felt for about ten seconds in Pohang, Daegu and other cities in the province.

The quake, which came just one week after a five-point-eight magnitude earthquake hit the area, forced the evacuation of many residents in Gyeongju City in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. Gyeongju had been the capital city of the Silla Dynasty, which lasted nearly a thousand years from 57 B.C.

Officials at the North Gyeongsang Province Fire Station say that no immediate damage or casualties have been reported so far.

In Busan, the second largest city on the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula 74 kilometers south of Gyeongju, citizens reported shaking of high-rise buildings in much of the city. The tremor was even felt as far as Seoul, about 300 kilometers northwest of Gyeongju.

In Ulsan, an industrial center on the southeast coast in South Gyeongsang Province, four KTX high-speed trains had to stop after the quake before resuming operations.

More than 370 aftershocks have occurred in the Gyeongju area since it was hit with a five-point-eight magnitude quake on September 12th. It was the strongest earthquake recorded on the Korean Peninsula since relevant statistics began to be compiled in 1978.
