A South Korean expert has argued that North Korea is capable of producing up to 79 nuclear weapons by the end of 2020.
Lee Sang-hyun, a senior researcher at the Sejong Institute, made the claim through a report he presented during a seminar hosted by the Presidential Committee for Unification Preparation in Seoul on Tuesday.
Lee presumed the North currently has up to 50 kilograms of plutonium and around 300 kilograms of highly enriched uranium.
Based on the estimates, Lee assessed the North is capable of producing four to eight miniaturized nuclear weapons every year and will raise the number of nuclear weapons in its possession to 79 by late 2020.
