Moon Calls for Independence in Police Investigation

Former leader of the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea Moon Jae-in used Friday's Police Day to call for independence in the police's investigation authority.

In a social media post, Moon argued the most important task for a new government will be to reform the country's prosecution.

He said the police must have independent investigative authority in order to investigate potential irregularities and wrongdoings by prosecutors.

Moon pointed out that even though 97 percent of criminal cases are open and shut by police, the right of legal investigation still lies with prosecutors.

In his view, the right to investigate should belong to police and the right to indict should belong to the prosecution.

Moon also called for the police force to reshape itself as an organization the public trust and support in upholding human rights.
