S. Korea to Announce Own Sanctions on N. Korea at Strategic Timing

South Korea says it will announce its own unilateral sanctions against North Korea at a time that maximizes strategic effect.

South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho June-hyuck told reporters Tuesday a government-wide review on the issue is under way.

South Korea is monitoring the development of a new round of UN sanctions to respond to North Korea's fifth nuclear test, and observers say it makes sense for Seoul to wait and calibrate its unilateral sanctions to best fit with the international ones.

Separately, Japan's Kyodo News reports Tokyo is considering imposing sanctions of its own on a third country company trading with North Korea.

That item is likely to come up at vice-foreign minister level talks scheduled to start Thursday in Tokyo between South Korea, the United States and Japan.
