Source: Seoul Proposed GSOMIA to Beijing in Addition to Tokyo

It has been made known that the South Korean government also proposed to Beijing the adoption of a military information sharing accord following a similar suggestion made to Tokyo.

A Seoul government source said on Friday that the government recently proposed signing a bilateral General Security of Military Information Agreement(GSOMIA) with Beijing, adding it is the second time Seoul suggested it following an earlier request in 2012.

The source said that since the 2000s, South Korea has continuously emphasized the necessity of having such a deal with China during government-level contacts with Beijing.

The source said, however, China is yet to show a visible response to the proposal.

Another official said having a GSOMIA not only with Russia but also with Japan and China will significantly enhance the preciseness and completion of Seoul’s information gathering activities regarding the North.

Earlier this week, South Korean government officials said Seoul and Tokyo will soon resume talks for the exchange of military intelligence after a four-year hiatus.

South Korea signed a GSOMIA with Russia in 2001.
