Opposition Aims to Vote on Park's Impeachment on Dec. 2

Opposition parties are seeking to draw up a motion to impeach President Park Geun-hye by Wednesday and put it up for a vote as early as next Friday.

The main opposition Democratic Party(DP) held the first meeting of its impeachment preparation committee led by Rep. Keum Tae-sup on Wednesday.

While the committee is aiming to finish its first draft of an impeachment motion by this month, DP Floor Leader Woo Sang-ho on Thursday expressed hope that lawmakers may be able to cast ballots on the matter at the plenary session on December second or ninth.

Woo said that President Park's request for a new prime minister candidate is no longer of his concern.

He added that opposition parties will discuss if the current Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Yoo Il-ho should remain on the post or be replaced by the president's nominee Yim Jong-yong. But other than that, he said the opposition side will focus on Park's ouster.

The minor opposition People’s Party also created a task force for the president's impeachment on Wednesday. The committee, led by Rep. Kim Kwan-young, decided in a meeting to draft an impeachment motion with the goal of proposing it to the parliament by as early as next Wednesday.

If the two parties propose a joint motion for impeachment to the National Assembly by next Wednesday, it will likely be reported to the general meeting of the parliament the following day and be put up for a vote on Friday.
