S. Korea to Begin Mass Production of M-SAM Missiles Next Year

It has been made known that South Korea will begin producing its advanced mid-range surface-to-air missiles next year.

A Seoul official said on Sunday that the government initially planned to complete the augmentation of the M-SAM missiles, also known as Cheongung or Cheolmae-2, by the end of next year.

The official, however, said the government will likely move up the date to begin mass production early in the year.

The South Korean military is known to have succeeded in all seven tests with the M-SAM missile so far since it successfully intercepted a ballistic missile during an inaugural test in January.

The missiles are called Korean-style Patriot missiles as they can hit incoming missiles flying at altitudes less than 20 kilometers above ground level, similar to U.S. Patriot missiles.

Priced at one-point-five billion won each, it is considered a key weapon for the Korean Air and Missile Defense(KAMD) system along with U.S. Patriot missiles, PAC-3, which Seoul will begin to purchase in 2018.
