Foreign Minister Defends Seoul-Tokyo Agreement on Sex Slavery

Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se has defended the agreement reached between Seoul and Tokyo last December on Japan’s wartime sex slavery, calling it the best outcome.

Speaking at a parliamentary interpellation session on Thursday, Yun acknowledged that the deal is criticized by many South Koreans.

However, he said that Seoul acquired the best result possible at the time, adding that the government worked hard through the tricky 20-month-long negotiations to resolve the issue that remained unaddressed for 24 years.

Noting that negotiations with Japan are difficult by nature, Yun said it would be hard to produce a better outcome than this in the future. He said if the government wanted to take the easiest route, it would have pretended to hold negotiations and passed the buck to the next administration.

Yun also denied the media reports that he had opposed the deal before it was announced.

Regarding the Choi Soon-sil scandal, he shot down the possibility that the Foreign Ministry might have also been affected by Choi's alleged influence peddling.
