Choi Soon-sil Summoned to Special Counsel Team for Questioning

Choi Soon-sil, a longtime confidante of President Park Geun-hye at the center of a massive influence-peddling scandal, has been summoned to the special counsel investigation team.

The 60-year-old was taken from the Seoul Detention Center to the office of Special Counsel Park Young-soo in southern Seoul at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Handcuffed and wearing light gray prison garb and a white mask, she kept her head down as she was taken to an interrogation room without answering reporters' questions.

She is accused of pressuring 53 conglomerates, including Samsung Group, into donating 77-point-four billion won to the nonprofit Mir and K-Sports foundations in collaboration with President Park and her former senior secretary An Chong-bum. Choi is also accused of leaking secret government documents from the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae and meddling in state affairs. She is also suspected of having illegally profited from state cultural and sports projects.

Investigators also want to know whether there were illegal deals between Choi and Ewha Womans University when her equestrian daughter was admitted to the private school in Seoul.

Choi was indicted by the prosecution on November 20th on charges of abuse of power, coercion, attempted fraud and other offenses. President Park was named an accomplice in the case.

At the first hearing in her trial at the Seoul Central District Court on Monday, she denied all of the charges against her.
