Poll: Moon Jae-in Maintains Leads, Ahn Hee-jung Soars

A new opinion poll shows that former chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party Moon Jae-in is continuing to enjoy a lead over other presidential hopefuls, but with a narrower gap.

South Chungcheong Province Governor Ahn Hee-jung is emerging as a new promising contender with surging support.

In the latest poll of one-thousand-seven people conducted by Gallup Korea from Tuesday to Thursday, Moon garnered support from 29 percent of the respondents, down three percentage points from last week. Ahn’s approval rating jumped nine percentage points to 19 percent during the same period.

Gallup explained that support for the governor has grown across the board among conservative and independent voters, as well as those in Chungcheong Province and the opposition bloc. His approval rating rose among respondents in their 20s, 40s and 50s.

Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn came in third with a rating of eleven percent, followed by Seongnam Mayor Lee Jae-myung and former cochairman of the minor opposition People’s Party Ahn Cheol-soo.

Bareun Party Representative Yoo Seong-min followed in sixth, trailed by former DP chief Sohn Hak-kyu.

The survey had a 95 percent confidence level with a margin of error of plus or minus three-point-one percentage points.
