Envoy to China: First Moon-Xi Summit Possible in Germany in July

President Moon Jae-in’s special envoy to China expects that the first summit between Moon and Chinese President Xi Jinping could be held as early as July.

Former Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan mentioned the possibility of a Moon-Xi summit on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany, as he met with reporters at Gimpo International Airport before his departure for Beijing on Thursday.

Lee said the two presidents could then have another bilateral summit around August 24th, when South Korea and China will mark the 25th anniversary of their bilateral diplomatic relations, adding he will discuss these possibilities during his talks with Xi.

The lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Party said that Seoul-Beijing relations have been strained, including on the fields of economy, culture, personal exchange and tourism, and he will focus on easing those strains as much as he can.

He said he will deliver Moon’s letter to Xi, adding he will try to precisely convey Moon’s intentions to China, including on the issue of the THAAD installation.

He said Moon and Xi already reached some consensus on the North Korean nuclear issue through telephone talks last week, and he will further explain Moon’s stance.
