Defense Ministry to Cooperate with New Probe into May 18th Uprising

The Ministry of National Defense will take measures necessary for a new investigation into how government troops opened fire on civilian protesters during the May 18th pro-democracy uprising in the southwest city of Gwangju in 1980.

Ministry spokesman Moon Sang-gyun said Thursday that the ministry recognizes a need to find the objective truth behind the incident and will take necessary measures if a fact-finding probe is launched with new parliamentary legislation. He added that detailed measures will be determined in line with government directions and guidelines.

The remarks come after President Moon Jae-in said in a ceremony commemorating the 37th anniversary of the May 18th Gwangju Democratization Movement on Thursday that the government will work harder to shed light on the truth behind the uprising, including who is responsible for government troops’ use of firearms against civilians.
