South Korea’s new Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha has spoken with former and incumbent chiefs of the United Nations following her appointment.
Kang on Sunday held separate telephone talks with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his predecessors Ban Ki-moon and Kofi Annan.
In the talks with Guterres, Kang said that the Seoul government will enhance cooperation with the UN under the principle that it will lead in efforts to promote democracy and peace.
In response, the UN chief reportedly expressed hope that Kang’s extensive experience will help improve the relations between South Korea and the UN.
The ministry said that Ban and Annan also congratulated Kang on her appointment and hoped she will use her experiences at the UN to achieve results as the top diplomat.
The ministry said that it is rare for a foreign minister to hold telephone talks with former and current UN chiefs on the day of appointment, indicating Kang established close relations with the UN chiefs.
