Spy Agency Launches Reform Committee to Fulfill President's Pledge

South Korea’s spy agency has launched an internal reform committee.

The National Intelligence Service(NIS) announced the move on Monday, saying the reform and development committee will assist its transformation into a forward-looking, competent agency by clearing its controversial past and helping it regain public trust.

The NIS said the launch of the committee reflects chief Suh Hoon’s will to fulfill President Moon Jae-in’s pledge to reform the agency, following its self-imposed ban political interventions.

The spy agency appointed Sungkonghoe University professor Jung Hae-gu, a member of the State Policy Planning and Advisory Committee, to head the committee.

The committee will have two task forces that will separately investigate the NIS's illegal involvement in domestic politics and handle its organizational reform.
