UNHCR: 1,422 N. Korean Escapees Granted Refugee Status Worldwide

Over 14-hundred North Korean escapees have been granted refugee status worldwide.
 
In its annual Global Trends report released Tuesday marking World Refugee Day, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees(UNHCR) said that 14-hundred-22 North Koreans who fled the North have been recognized as refugees around the world as of late last year, an increase of 319 from 2015.
 
Five-hundred-33 North Korean escapees are currently waiting to obtain refugee status after applying for asylum. This number has also more than doubled from 230 a year ago.
 
The UN Human Rights Council said the combined figure of North Korean defectors who have received or are in the process of seeking refugee status worldwide stands at 19-hundred-55, up 28 percent from just over 13-hundred the previous year.
