U.S. Flies 2 B-1B Bombers to S. Korea

Report: The U.S. dispatched two B-1B strategic bombers to the Korean Peninsula for a joint exercise with the South Korean Air Force.

The two U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancers flew from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam to the East Sea via the skies of the southern island of Jeju. During their flight, the bombers participated in a joint drill with the South Korean Air Force’s F-15K fighters and conducted a bombing exercise in Gangwon Province.

A military source said that the dispatch demonstrates the U.S.’ determination to curb military threats from North Korea.

The deployment is attracting keen attention, as it comes amid controversy over special presidential adviser on foreign affairs and security Moon Chung-in’s recent remarks. He said that if North Korea suspends its nuclear and missile activities, South Korea in return could reduce the scale of its annual military exercises with the U.S. and scale down the deployment of American strategic weapons on the Korean Peninsula.

Some analysts interpret it as a move by the U.S. to display its will to continue to deploy its strategic weapons to the Korean Peninsula, despite the presidential adviser’s opinion.

But a military official cautioned against over-interpretation of the Lancer dispatch, which he said is part of a scheduled South Korea-U.S. joint exercise.

The supersonic heavy bombers were sent to the East Sea for training hours after North Korea launched a ballistic missile on May 29th.
