Gov’t to Directly Manage Genetic Information of Separated Families

The government will place the genetic information of families separated by the Korean War under its direct control.
The government approved a revision to an act on the issue of separated families in a video Cabinet meeting between Seoul and Sejong government complexes, which was chaired by Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon on Tuesday morning.
Under the revision, the genetic samples of separated families will be transferred from private DNA analyzers to the National Bio Bank affiliated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Unification Ministry collected 64-thousand-545 genetic samples of 21-thousand-515 members of separated families from 2014 to 2016. It plans to obtain genetic information of an additional one-thousand separated families this year.
