China's Top Diplomat: Seoul and Beijing Should Jointly Maintain Common Interests

Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi met with South Korea’s First Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam in Beijing on Tuesday.

Yang said he places importance on Lim’s visit and stressed the need for Seoul and Beijing to jointly maintain common interests.

Yang cited that Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Moon Jae-in spoke over the phone recently, describing the dialogue as very significant.

Yang said Moon revealed intentions to work toward improving and advancing Seoul-Beijing ties as well as cooperating closely with China to address bilateral discords. Yang said China highly regards such an attitude from South Korea.

In response, Lim noted that South Korea and China are marking the 25th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties this year. He also pointed out that since taking office, Moon has underlined the need for Seoul and Beijing to work together toward advancing their ties to a substantial strategic and cooperative partnership.
