Passports Reported Lost to Immediately Become Invalid

The Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that starting from Thursday, a passport that is reported to be lost will immediately become invalid.
Currently, if a passport is reported to have been lost by its owner, it remains valid until the owner applies for a reissuance. Therefore, with the new move, even if a passport that was lost is recovered, it will become obsolete.
The new measure will go into effect in line with revisions to the nation’s passport law.
The Foreign Ministry explained that the new measure would make it possible for the ministry to swiftly share data on misplaced passports with Interpol and other international organizations.
The ministry added that the revisions to the passport law would likely raise the global credibility of South Korean passports by blocking, in advance, the possibility of lost passports being forged or misused by international crime organizations.
