National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun expressed hope that rival parties will produce a bipartisan bill to revise the Constitution by the end of the year.
Chung revealed the timeline on Monday in his speech marking the 69th Constitution Day at parliament, suggesting a floor vote on the revision in May and a referendum on the new Constitution during the upcoming local elections in June.
Chung said that in the last presidential election, candidates from rival parties all pledged to seek a constitutional amendment, and drafting a new Constitution is no longer a subject to review but a duty.
