Gov't Urges Japan to Withdraw Claims over Dokdo in Defense White Paper

The government has urged Japan to immediately withdraw its renewed claims to South Korea’s easternmost islets of Dokdo in its latest defense white paper.
The government made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday under the name of Foreign Ministry Spokesman Cho June-hyuck as it condemned Tokyo’s claims.
The statement said the Japanese government must realize that making repeated futile claims over Dokdo is of absolutely no help to advancing the future-oriented, mature and cooperative ties between Seoul and Tokyo.
The statement also stressed that Seoul will sternly respond to any provocations toward Dokdo which is clearly South Korean territory historically, geographically and under international law.
It is said that after issuing the statement, the government will summon an official of Japan’s Embassy in Seoul and convey Seoul’s protest.
In its defense white paper issued earlier in the day, the Japanese government said, like last year, that territorial issues concerning the Japanese territories of the Northern Territories and Takeshima remain unsettled. Takeshima is Japan's name for the Dokdo islets and the Northern Territories are what Japan calls four islands in the Pacific which are at the center of a territorial dispute with Russia.
This year marked the 13th straight year for Japan to include its territorial claims over Dokdo in its defense white paper.
