FM Kang: N. Korea Has Become More Isolated

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said Tuesday that she came to realize just how seriously North Korea is diplomatically isolated after attending the ASEAN Regional Forum(ARF) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in the Philippines.

Kang told South Korean reporters in Manila that the North faced difficulties right from the start of the ARF meeting as its participation came shortly after the UN Security Council(UNSC) adopted Resolution 2371 which sought tougher sanctions on the North for its nuclear and missile provocations.

She said that the North became even more isolated after declaring a hard-line stance in a government statement protesting the new UNSC resolution.

Kang said that the foreign minister of the Philippines, which chaired the gathering, met the North’s foreign minister on behalf of ASEAN after the North faced mostly rejections to its requests to hold bilateral talks with many countries at the ARF gathering.

Kang said that at the regional gathering, South Korea, the U.S. and Japan agreed to boost cooperation in coping with the North’s military threats amid the possibility Pyongyang will engage in provocations in protest of joint South Korea-U.S. military exercises set to begin later this month.
