President Moon Apologizes to Victims of Deadly Humidifier

President Moon Jae-in offered an apology Tuesday to victims and families affected by a deadly humidifier sterilizer that was mass-marketed as safe despite being fatally toxic.

A court sentenced executives from a subsidiary company of the British Reckitt Benckiser conglomerate to prison time earlier this year for accidental homicide and false advertising after their product was found liable for dozens of deaths and hundreds of cases of serious illness.

A civic group in Seoul says that one-thousand-212 deaths and five-thousand-657 victims who suffered damage from the toxic humidifier disinfectant have been reported to the government as of Monday.

Moon told victims and family members specially invited to the presidential office that even though the fault lay with the manufacturer, the government should bear some responsibility for failing to prevent the incident.

The president vowed the government will do what it can do in assisting victims and their families, some of whom have filed a class action suit against the company for compensation.

This is the first time a South Korean president apologized for the humidifier scandal.
