6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Hits China's Sichuan Province

At least nineteen people have died and around 250 were injured after a six-point-five magnitude earthquake hit central China, according to the Associated Press.

The Chinese disaster management authority said as many as 100 people are feared dead based on 2010 census data of the quake-stricken sparsely-populated region north of Sichuan province.

The quake struck at around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday local time from some 300 kilometers north of the provincial capital of Chengdu.

Twenty-one people are said to have been seriously injured.

The South Korean consulate general in the area says 99 South Korean tourists who were touring the region have all been evacuated safely. Two are said to have suffered minor injuries.

China’s national commission for disaster reduction said more than 130-thousand houses are estimated to have been damaged.

The quake was followed by a six-point-three magnitude earthquake which struck China's  northwestern Xinjiang province, close to the border of Kazakhstan on Wednesday morning, however there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

In 2008, over 70-thousand people were killed in a quake in the quake-prone Sichuan province.
