Pres. Moon Says Intensive Reform of Nat'l Defense Needed

President Moon Jae-in said on Wednesday that there is a need to significantly overhaul national defense.

Moon made the remark at the presidential office when he received reports from six four-star generals on their promotions, including Army Chief of Staff Kim Yong-woo.

Moon told the generals that he believes that intensive reform of national defense is a pending task.

On North Korea’s nuclear and missile provocations, the president instructed the top military officials to promptly reinforce military preparedness, saying that securing the capacity to respond to such threats is urgent.

He then urged the generals to exert efforts so that the nation will never again see defense-related corruption cases.

On the allegations that Army General Park Chan-ju and his wife abused enlisted soldiers stationed at their residence, Moon stressed the need for a reform in the culture of military practices.

Moon called on the generals to make all-out efforts to guarantee the human rights of soldiers. He said that Park’s case shocked the public as the human rights of soldiers were violated by a high-level military official.
