Assembly Speaker Chung, Top Pakistani Officials Discuss Cooperation

National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun has discussed mutual cooperation with Pakistan's top government officials, including the country’s interim Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

During a meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday, with Abbasi and Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif, Chung expressed confidence in Pakistan's smooth transition from the current political turmoil caused by the ouster of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over a corruption scandal. He pointed to President Moon Jae-in's smooth transition to replace impeached President Park Geun-hye as an example.

In regards to Pakistan's major concern of terrorist threats, Chung suggested that luring foreign companies, including those from South Korea, could enhance the stability of the South Asian country.

Prime Minister Abbasi responded by saying he was touched by the power and maturity of the South Korean democracy, as seen through its recent power transition, and noted that Pakistan is considering providing a variety of assistance for foreign firms to attract outside investment, including from South Korea.

Foreign Minister Asif celebrated South Korea’s significant economic development over the past 50 years, expecting Pakistan will enjoy a similar growth utilizing South Korea’s know-how.

He also expressed hope that ongoing talks on a bilateral trade deal between the two countries will also come to a swift settlement.
