Presidential Office: Seoul Not Considering Tactical Nuclear Armament

South Korea's Presidential Office has clarified once again that redeployment of tactical nuclear weapons is not being considered, despite growing calls from the opposition bloc for the country to arm itself with nuclear weapons against growing North Korean threats.

Lee Sang-chul, first vice chief of the National Security Office at the top office, told reporters on Tuesday that there is no change in Seoul’s stance on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, which the government has maintained since 1991.

He stressed the Moon Jae-in administration has never considered the redeployment of U.S. tactical nuclear arms.

Lee said redeploying tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea can create many problems and weaken Seoul's justification and call for nuclear disarmament of the North.

He added that it can also trigger a domino effect and spark a nuclear armament race in Northeast Asia.
