Bareun Party to Hold National Convention before Nov. 30th

The minor opposition Bareun Party has decided to forgo naming former presidential candidate Yoo Seong-min as its interim leader.

Instead, it will hold a national party convention before the end of November to elect its new leadership, with floor leader Joo Ho-young serving as acting chief in the mean time.

The party unanimously reached the decision on Thursday after four hours of heated discussion about whether to name Yoo as interim chief or elect a new leadership in a convention.

Joo told a news briefing that lawmakers and the party's Supreme Council members discussed the matter before holding a Supreme Council meeting, which decided to hold the convention before November 30th.

The Bareun Party has been suffering an internal rift with one group supporting a merger with the main opposition Liberty Korea Party for a united conservative bloc and the other calling for independent survival. Yoo is a strong advocate of the party's independent survival.

The party's former chairwoman Lee Hye-hoon resigned last week over a graft scandal.
