Seoul Transfers War Dead Excavation Expertise to Vietnam

The South Korean government will transfer to Vietnam technology and information related to the excavation of remains and their preservation and identification.

The Defense Ministry said Thursday that a delegation from Vietnam's National Steering Committee 1237, which searches for and repatriates remains of fallen soldiers, came to Korea on Monday to establish cooperative relations with Seoul for an excavation project on the war dead.

The state-led steering committee founded in July 2013 is dedicated to locating the remains of some 300-thousand Vietnamese soldiers still unaccounted for since the Vietnam War.

The delegation on Tuesday visited the South Korean Defense Ministry's recovery and identification team of those killed in action and asked for cooperation in their efforts to find missing fallen soldiers of the Vietnam War.

The two sides agreed on joint efforts and exchanged a written agreement.

The delegates from Vietnam also visited a Korean War excavation site in Inje, Gangwon Province and observed the process of collecting remains.
