Military Denies Surveillance Allegations by LKP Leader

The military has denied the suspicion raised by the head of the largest opposition party that his secretary has become a target of surveillance by the military, prosecution and police under the Moon Jae-in administration.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, the Army said its prosecution requested from a mobile carrier in August personal information of a secretary of Liberty Korea Party Chairman Hong Joon-pyo as part of its investigation into a corruption allegation involving a division commander.

The statement said military prosecutors found that the secretary, only identified by his surname Son, was among the several people revealed to have talked with the division commander on his mobile phone. The statement also said the request for information was made legally in accordance with relevant laws.

Hong raised the suspicion of political surveillance on his Facebook as well as during his party’s Supreme Council meeting on Monday.

The South Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency also denied Hong's allegation of political surveillance. The police acknowledged requesting personal information of his secretary, but it was made after his telephone number was found in the cell phone of a suspect under investigation.
